After the recognition of the Christian religion as an official
one, the existing then hidden temple outside the acropolis
walls, was moved here and dedicated to the great emperor
and his mother. About "St.St.Konstantin
and Elena" church mentions the German professor
in heology from the Tiumbenghen University Stephen Gerlach.
In 1578 he visited Plovdiv. According to him,the ceremonies
in the church were held only during the celebration. It
is unanimously considered the oldest church in Plovdiv.
Built in 337 in honour of Emperor Konstantin and his mother
Elena, who chased away the pagan Gods outside the confines
of the Roman Empire. |

It was
ruined and reconstructed several times by Romans,Greeks,Turks
and Bulgarians. In the beginning of 19 c. the Bulgarian
patriot Todor Moravenov undertook one sacred deed - he
initiated the collection of voluntary donations for the
reconstruction of the church.

Almost
at the same time a firman was taken from the Sultan for
the reconstruction of the ruined church. The reconstruction
was entrusted to master masons from Bratzigovo. On October
30, 1832 the church was sanctified by the Plovdiv Metropolitan
Nikephorus. Master masons from the Debar school wrought
the new iconostasis. It is gold plated and an exaple of
the earliest Bulgarian baroque style.
